EAST OF EDEN IS OVER. I STILL CANT BELIEVE IT.
WARNING: spoilers! lol
i watched without subs bc its not on viikii yet, so i may go back and edit a few things tomorrow. There were only a few scenes that I had trouble with, so mostly the recap should be fine. Screen caps tomorrow bc right now I can’t handle more east of eden. THE ENDING WAS SUPER EMOTIONAL<3

when i watched the entire episode again to make screen caps, i swear it was ten times sadder. i was really really crying for the entire warehouse scene. i think it was song seung heon’s best episode really. everyone was amazing♥♥♥

Episode 56 starts with Dong wook arresting Dong chul.
When the other police run up over the hill, Dong chul is shocked- his younger brother has completely betrayed him.

He asks if this was Dong wook’s plan from the beginning, but Dong wook just orders the men to drag him to the car. He yells back that Young ran is in danger, but Dong wook ignores him.

Dong wook tells one of his assistants to hurry and do something about Young ran.

Young ran is tied to a chair and gagged in some storage room.

She struggles to her feet, but can’t get up the stairs with the chair and she falls down.

Myung hun is escorted out of the press conference. He sees Ji hyun in the crowd of reporters.
She shoves her way through them and runs over to hold his hand. <333
She tells him not to worry about anything- she will take care of Taeho and wait for him.
“Be strong.”
FINALLY A LOVING MOMENT FOR THEIR COUPLE!


Until he has to go.

Dong wook’s guys aurround Jackies place and throw in smoke bombs. They run in and beat up all the gangsters.
Young ran is still tied up downstairs when Jackie and his right hand man burst in with a few others.

They manage to escape out the back door with Young ran while the police attack everyone else.
Dok sa sees them escape. (Okay.. maybe it was Dong chul’s guys attacking? They looked like police officers though…)

Dong chul is in jail and is really stressed out because he knows Young ran is in danger.

Dong wook is in his office and he is also stressed out. He remembers Dong chul begging him in the park and promising to do anything if Dong wook could just save Young ran.
His assistant comes in and tells him they were unable to find Young ran. The phone rings… it’s HK’s president.

That would be.. Rebecca, right? HK Bank?
Dong wook drives to a parking garage and sees… Kyung tae! In the back of the car is… Rebecca!
I think she says she isn’t apologizing..
“You are really Shin tae hwan’s son.”

Dong wook is really mean to her and she is obviously affected by what he is saying. Then Kyung tae pulls out a recorder and plays it for Dong wook. It’s when he plotted how to turn Dong wook and Dong chul against each other with the tape thing.

Seeing Dong wook’s face, Rebecca is once again pleased with herself. Dong wook cries and shakes his head… he can’t believe what is happening.
Kyung tae interrupts when Dong wook grabs Rebecca- to tell him that Shin tae hwan really did cut the brakes on the car of Chunhee and Dong chul. This means that the Lee family has been right all along in everything they have told Dong wook. He shouldn’t have trusted Shin tae hwan.

Then Rebecca gives him a piece of paper with the password to something at HK bank… and Dong wook remembers President Gook lying in bed and whispering to him that he knew the secret about Shin tae hwan that no one else knew.
Dong wook goes to the bank and goes through all the papers in the secret box.
He remembers Rebecca saying all the things Dong chul did for Dong wook… his whole life…

And then he finds pictures of Dong chul and Young ran together. He remembers Chunhee in the hospital telling him that Dong chul only wants to protect him. And he remembers moments with Dong chul where he refused to believe what Dong chul told him.
And he remembers their little fist greeting.

Dong wook takes a police car.

Shin tae hwan in his office is taking out big wads of cash and stuffing them into a briefcase when Dong wook appears.

Shin tae hwan asks what is going on…

“I’m your father!”
“I know…”
Dong wook is ANGRY. Shin tae hwan tells him to get a hold of himself, but Dong wook explodes with all the accusations about Dong chul.
“What are you talking about?”
Dong wook continues yelling. He brings up the accusation of cutting the brakes and Shin tae hwan can’t really say anything. He pretends to not know what Dong wook is talking about, but Dong wook pulls out the yellow envelope. (With the pictures, info, etc.)

Dong wook says (I think) that as a lawyer, he is going to do something about all this. Shin tae hwan puts his hands on his shoulders and reminds Dong wook that he is his son.
This makes Dong wook even angrier, of course. He says something really mean that I don’t understand, and leaves.
Shin tae hwan is in shock and worried. Without Dong wook, he really has no one and all his plans will begin to fall apart. He yells that Dong wook is crazy but then gets a hold of himself and switches into his regular mode of evil plotting.
“You’re mine! You’re my son!”
Dong wook is back in the police car and crying. Suddenly an emergency call comes in on the radio.
“We have an emergency situation. Lee Dong Chul has escaped.”

Dong wook grabs the radio and yells at them that this absolutely CAN NOT happen!

Dong chul runs away from the jail although he is being followed by both police officers and dogs. Running and running, he manages to catch up to Dok sa who has a car. He is freaking awesome at escaping from the law, seriously.

Shin tae hwan drinks alone at home. He muses on the fact that he is all alone, and chuckles to himself.
“Who am I?”
He can’t believe that the super powerful Shin tae hwan has been abandoned by everyone. Then Kyung tae bursts in.

He says something has arrived and Shin tae hwan is super happy. Whatever has come is something that gives him some last chance to survive all this.
In the car, he pats his money briefcase and continues laughing. (From relief, I guess.)
Kyung tae asks if he is tired, and offers him a little vial of something. POISON! Kyung tae is such a back stabber! Shin tae hwan takes it though… he thinks Kyung tae is loyal to him. He drinks down the whole thing.

Soon after, he passes out.
In the middle of a field, he wakes up in the car. He looks around and asks where he is. But he is tied up.
He starts shouting for Kyung tae… but we all know that won’t do him any good.

Kyung tae appears and smirks at him. I think every person in the world has a grudge against Shin tae hwan for something.

Then Rebecca appears. (Scary music!)

She gets into the driver’s seat of the car, next to Shin tae hwan.
He gets super angry when he realizes that she is the one that turned Dong wook against him. She asks if he knows how much she has suffered because of him.
Not really sure what they are talking about… but I think she is saying what an awful person he is and how much he has screwed her up. And tells him everything will end today.
“I’m Shin tae hwan!”

He still arrogantly thinks that nothing bad will happen to him and that she is just a psycho. But she is overcome with pain from all her memories- she says she has no other choice.
And she starts the car. IS SHE GOING TO KILL THEM BOTH?

He screams at her to get a hold of herself and stop the car… but she just speeds up. And lets go of the wheel.

Their car flies off the cliff.
Time slows down and we watch them both as the car flies through the air. Shin tae hwan slowly closes his eyes and a tear falls…

and then the car smashes into the river.
Kyung tae runs over. And he smiles. JERK. He has the briefcase of money. Has he been loyal to anyone? He turns around AND GUESS WHO IS THERE?

Mr.Hwang.

Chunhee sits up suddenly in her hospital bed, screaming for Dong chul. Yoon hee is there and then Ji hyun, Myung hun, and Taeho arrive.

Myung hun and Ji hyun say something about Dong wook… totally didn’t get this conversation… shouldn’t try to multitask…

Dong wook answers the phone and it’s Mr.Hwang. Mr.Hwang says that he has Dong chul there with him.

Dong wook believes him.

Dong chul, Dok sa, and Wang gun arrive at… the place where Young ran is being held, I assume.

Dok sa and Wang gun attack some gaurds while Dong chul sneaks into the warehouse.
He looks around and finally sees Young ran HANGING FROM THE CEILING. WOW.

He drops down in front of her and starts beating up everyone. There are way too many of them and he is losing so Young ran starts freaking out.

(DONG WOOK NEEDS TO COME SAVE THEM RIGHT NOW BC THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.)
Somehow, Dong chul manages to smash them all with like a giant book case. He is super bloody and injured but he makes his way over to Young ran.
He unties her and lets her down gently. And collapses on the floor. He peels the tape off her face and asks if she is okay.

“Soup ladle, are you okay?”
“I’m okay. I’m okay. Ahjussi, I knew you would come.”
“Soup ladle… wherever you are, I will come there.”
He says he is okay. (But obviously he isn’t..)

He tries to push himself up and says they need to leave now. He drags himself up and unties her.

Why couldn’t they have just lived happily and peacefully together?
Outside, a bunch of police cars arrive. Including Dong wook.
They surround the entrance to the warehouse.
Inside, Dong chul and Young ran are sneaking around, trying to find a safe way out.
OH NO!
Jackie’s sidekick comes out of freaking nowhere and holds a gun to Dong chul’s head. And then he points it at Young ran and threatens to kill her.


Outside, Dong wook is getting really stressed out. He decides he needs to go in by himself. He rips off his bullet proof vest and walks in.
NO DONG WOOK!!
The doors open and he is allowed in. To where Jackie’s sidekick is waiting. He is patted down for weapons, and he instantly demands to know where Dong chul and Young ran are. He looks to the side and sees them being led down the stairs with guns pointed at them.

“Hyung?”
“Dong wook ah…”
“Hyung!”
!#$#%$&^*Y*@$%#$!@ WHO ELSE IS DYING RIGHT NOW?

Dong wook apologizes but dong chul shakes his head. He and Young ran are forced down the stairs. Dong wook moves to hug him but is stopped by Jackie’s sidekick. Young ran looks distrustful, but Dong chul knows his little brother is back.
And then Jackie appears. He asks for a helicopter and guaranteed safety. Dong wook agrees.
WHAT!??! DONG WOOK’S ENGLISH IS AMAZING! I THINK HE IS THE BEST IN THE WHOLE FREAKING DRAMA! WHY IS HE THE ONE WITH ONLY LIKE ONE ENGLISH LINE WHEN HE CAN ACTUALLY SPEAK ENGLISH?
He demands the release of the hostages before he will agree to any terms. Jackie releases Young ran but wants to keep Dong chul. Dong chul tells Dong wook that it’s fine- just take Young ran!
Both Dong wook and Young ran are against this plan, but the guys drag Young ran outside.

“No! I don’t want to! Ahjussi! No!”

He obviously doesn’t really want her to go either..
Some guys sneak in (Dok sa and Wang gun?) So Jackies side kick flips out and starts shooting everyone.


He aims his gun at Dong wook and Dong chul yells his name and jumps in front of him, getting shot right in the chest.
Everything goes completely silent as Dong wook catches Dong chul. They fall to the floor and sound returns as Jackie and his sidekick are shot by the police.
The police come in to the warehouse and shoot everyone but Dong wook can only think of Dong chul.

“Get a hold of yourself! Hyung, you can’t go!”
Dong wook begs with Dong chul, saying that he can’t leave their family.

“Dong wook ah, I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
“No. No, no no! I was wrong! You can’t do this! We can live together with Myung hun!”
“Dong wook, you know that I love you, right?”
“I know! Hyung! Get a hold of yourself!”

Young ran sees what is happening and runs over to them. Dok sa and Wang gun are being held back by police officers but are also freaking out because they see Dong chul dying.

Young ran tells him he can’t die, and he says he is fine.
She tells him they just got married! They were supposed to have a good life~
He tells her he doesn’t want to die.

He says they must meet again.
She promises.

He then calms down and Dong wook realizes that Dong chul really is about to die.
“Soup ladle… you have to live.”

He turns his head to look, and sees his father in his mind. He remembers Ki chul telling him that good people have to love even the bad people.
“Father… father…”
He closes his eyes… for the last time.


Young ran and Dong wook are sobbing and screaming over Dong chul’s body, begging him to get up.

In a happy family scene, Young ran holds a bay on her lap.

Finally, the big happy family that I had always wished for has come to be real. Yoon hee and Myung hun and Taeho and everyone.
Finally they are happy and together. Young ran’s baby is one year old and they are celebrating its birthday.
From Dong chul’s point of view, we see the family and they welcome him.

Then we see Dong chul.
This has always been his dream as well. He looks at Young ran.

“I love you.”
He cries and smiles, watching the perfect family.
“I love you.”

Instead of previews we get a flashback to Ki chul and little Dong chul.
“A man’s heart has to be as big as that mountain.”

WOW. THAT’S ALL I CAN SAY.
THEY FREAKING KILLED DONG CHUL.
WHO ELSE WAS CRYING?

if I could have picked the absolute worst possible ending… it would be for Dong chul to die. And that’s what happened. I can’t believe it.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A FREAKING HAPPY ENDING.
okay. I am disappointed right now but I am not going to decide anything yet.
I need some time to think about the drama as a whole and decide if this was the right ending. It was really really well done. Dong wook turned good at the perfect time (like he was too late to save his brother, but it made the ending amazingly intense and I did love that.)
Everything would have been perfect if only Dong chul hadn’t died.
But… it would be weird for such a tragic drama to end so happily, so I should have seen it coming. I am glad that Shin tae hwan died and I think it is fitting that Rebecca killed herself as well- I don’t think she could have lived with herself after all the bad things she did.
Yoon hee, Myung hun, Ji hyun, and Taeho were all accepted into the Lee family, so other than Dong chul being there in the final scene, I think it really can come true, and that makes me happy. Knowing that the family will be happy and perfect and will be able to support each other through this is really nice. (Wow that sounds like I think this is real life and not a tv show. I SWEAR I KNOW ITS ALL FAKE LOL.)
I will write a review of the drama as a whole tomorrow. Like I said, I need time to evaluate it rather than just going on my current feelings which are just that I am sad Dong chul died.

at the end was a preview for a drama with Oh Jiho whom I totally love, maybe I will watch that next?
